Paperworks VII: Welcome

This paper-centric exhibition focuses on how paper can be utilized in art. We asked artists how they push this ancient, tactile experience of using paper to create book arts, sculptures, and other forms of fine art.

My Thoughts

I am honored to have created this exhibition; it was a show that didn't have to happen and one that I was driven to make before I would leave the Foundry Art Centre. I was thrilled to receive such a wide range of entries, almost 300 submissions from 105 artists around the world, ranging from 30 states in the US to China, the United Kingdom, and Slovakia. This show was displayed alongside a traveling exhibition, and though space was always a concern when inserting an additional show, which I believe compliments them both.
I kept color and tactile at the forefront of my decision making while installing this show. Making sure to accentuate embellished pages of a book alongside 3Dimensional paintings out of paper, alongside full installations. There are book in this show, as to be expected, but the books are not quite what you would imagine would become a book; a cast of a face, the shirt of a late loved one, skin of animals; all to showcase the further express the boundlessness of the simple medium of paper.
When a visitor walks through this exhibition I want them to understand the versatility of such a simple material of paper. Though it is one of the smallest juried shows the Foundry has ever hosted, I believe the work itself makes such a beautiful impact when you first walk in.
